5 ways activated charcoal can make skin glow

Unexpected reasons why you should consider a charcoal based product

By Pauline Susman

Activated Charcoal - Also referred to as activated carbon - is a charcoal that has undergone a heating process that makes it safe for medicinal use. This process, which increases the charcoal's absorptive ability, allows it to expand into a porous surface, capable of trapping a multitude of chemicals and toxins.

5 ways activated charcoal can make skin glow?!  Are you saying this black powder does more than just dirty your sink?

I’m sure you’ve heard all about activated charcoal soap from your friends. ‘It clears up my acne and tones my skin’ they brag.  I bet you are wondering what all the fuss is about..

Well, as it turns out this special charcoal has pretty potent detoxing properties that can deeply cleanse your skin.  Let’s dig a little deeper to find out about this amazing product.

What is Activated Charcoal?

Soap made with charcoal is BLACK, a beautiful deep and rich black and sometimes I wonder if that is why it sells so well.  As it turns out though, activated charcoal also performs miracles on your skin and it has been used throughout the centuries for precisely this reason.  Its super adsorbent qualities means it can be used for anything form drawing out a splinter to extracting poison.

So how is it made?

Making activated carbon involves heating carbon-rich materials, such as wood, peat, coconut shells, or sawdust, to very high temperatures.

This ‘activation’ process strips the charcoal of previously absorbed molecules and frees up bonding sites again. This process also reduces the size of the pores in the charcoal and makes more holes in each molecule, therefore, increasing its overall surface area.

As a result, one teaspoon full of activated charcoal has more surface area than a football field.  Incredible right?

Activated Charcoal clears oily skin and tightens pores

Your teenager struggles with bad acne and you wonder how to help her regain her self confidence. A soap with added charcoal or a face mask made with activated charcoal is the perfect solution as it absorbs any excess oil and cleans out pores. It not only removes sebum build up on your skin but also tightens your pores which gives an all over smoother looking complexion.

Charcoal soap fights ageing and wrinkles

YES! You heard me right! Activated charcoal is an important part of your beauty routine if you want younger, firmer looking skin. It tightens skin and therefore removes wrinkles. Another great side effect of using this soap regularly is that it evens out skin blemishes over time and tones your skin. This a lot of credit to give to one product but activated charcoal has stood the test of time for a reason!

Activated Charcoal is gently exfoliating

Is your skin looking tired and dull?  Whip up a charcoal face mask or use a beautiful black soap to gently buff off dead skin cells.  Exfoliation is essential to remove build up and grime and to smooth out blemishes and dry skin.  Activated charcoal can achieve a this largely due to its enormous adsorptive qualities.  It binds to impurities and excess oil and in doing so purifies and deep cleans skin.

Psoriasis and dry skin are a thing of the past!

Getting that dry itchy skin again? Charcoal is a super detoxing agent coming in to help you get over your skin issues. Besides being a cool colour, a charcoal based soap (like my Black Magic bar) is wonderful to soothe irritated skin caused by psoriasis or eczema. Heck!
